Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES)

There are 3 main focuses of the TOLES exams:

1. absolute accuracy

2. a strong legal vocabulary

3. familiarisation with modern legal style.

All of these elements begin with this Step 1 exam. Learners are challenged to recognise their own common mistakes in English as well as being required to identify accurate prepositions and collocations within a legal context, particularly within the context of written contracts.

Foundations Level - Step 1

The aim of the Foundation Exam is to ensure learners are equipped with a strong basis upon which to build the skills required by employers. We have analysed the drafting and general writing skills of thousands of international lawyers when working on office-based tasks and devised a step-by-step programme to help them eliminate mistakes and reach the standard required. The TOLES Foundation materials and exam ensure that serious learners will be successful and won’t make the very common mistake of attempting more advanced tasks before mastering the basics.

• Oral and written contracts
• Sole trader businesses
• Traditional partnerships and LLPs

• Disputes and litigation

• The law of tort
• The liability of businesses for negligence
• The liability of businesses for nuisance
• Employment & labor matters
• Copyright, patents and trademarks
• Alternatives to litigation
• How the common law works

Higher Level - Step 2

The major aim of the Higher Exam is to build on the skills and knowledge learners have acquired at Foundation level and take them on to the next level. Legal vocabulary acquired at Foundation level is now tested in a series of very challenging tasks and learners are asked to deal with extracts from documents based on the types of examples suggested to us by leading law firms.

The TOLES organization is a private legal training company which was created as a direct result of extensive consultations with a leading commercial law firm. In confidential talks with us, partners in the firm complained that law graduates holding a wide variety of English language certificates lacked the level of English required to carry out essential legal tasks. TOLES materials and exams were developed in 2000 as a direct solution to this problem.

We are members of the International Division of the Law Society of England and Wales and our training materials and exams are very well-known among law firms and very highly valued by them. We are not affiliated with any university or English language organization simply because they cannot guide and inform us in the way other members of our Law Society division are able to.

Please note that TOLES is intended to assist working lawyers and there are other legal English courses and exams which are more academic, more fluency based, and therefore more suitable for international law graduates who plan to take an LLM or a PhD in law.
